Healthy Alternative Frozen Dog Treats

I went shopping at Wegmans a couple nights ago with my friend Sharon. We started off at Tops, but the produce looked like crap. I had to dig through about 30 nectarines just to find 2 that weren’t disgustingly bruised or half rotten. So we said the heck with it and took off to shop in greener pastures.

So here we are in Wegmans at the end of our shopping and we decide to check out the ice cream. Unfortunately I didn’t find anything interesting for myself, but I did discover a healthy doggy ice cream which apparently has been on the market for a few years now. Dogsters Healthy Treats, sold nationally since 2005, are all natural, low calorie, and low fat frozen dog treats.

At first, I picked up a package of Frosty Paws, then out of the corner of my eye I spotted the Dogsters. So I compared the two products… yes, the mommy even reads labels for her pups. What surprised me was the relatively short list of ingredients on the Dogsters compared to the long barely pronounceable ingredient list on the Frosty Paws. So Dogsters it was.

And as you can see by the pictures taken, Dogsters had a successful product launch in the Paris home. The flavor of the moment was the Cheddar Cheese Peanut Butter.

The following was taken off the Dogsters website:

What makes Dogsters different from other frozen dog treats? It’s the only healthy frozen treat for dogs on the market. All Dogster products are:.

Low Calorie
Low Fat
All Natural
Formulated with value added healthy ingredients.
Without Animal Fat
Without BHA or BHT

Dogsters products include:

Dogsters was acquired by J&J Snack Foods in 2007, so I don’t know if they are still carrying all the flavors listed above, but it seems worth looking into. I only saw the Cheddar Cheese PB flavor at Wegmans. According to the J&J Snack Foods website, they will donate 5-cents to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine for each package of Dogsters sold through December 31st, 2011.
