Uh, yeah… Girls DO Play Ice Hockey

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I was raised in a very non-athletic family. Not only that, I also seem to have inherited the clumsy gene. Perhaps it’s because of this gene, which has a detrimental effect on gross motor coordination, that my parents and other family members prefer reading over athletics.

Somewhere, somehow a mutation occurred, and I developed this desire to want to participate in sports. I was always a rough houser tomboy who didn’t mind getting covered head to toe in mud, building tree forts, and playing with toy guns. But due to severe lack in athletic ability (I still can’t throw a ball to save my life) my dream of playing a team sport didn’t come to fruition until I was in the 10th grade. I was the kid that always got picked last in gym class, unless by some miracle, there was a special ed kid placed in my class. Then, and only then, did I get to avoid the total humiliation of being picked last.

Believe it or not, the above statement was one of the reasons I decided to play ice hockey back in 1982. There were no other girls playing the sport, so by default, I could be the “best” at something.

(fashionably late) PhotoHunt: Emotion(s)

Tonawanda Lady Lightning Women\'s Ice Hockey 1997 New York State Champions Heidi J.I was looking for an excuse to show off some of my hockey stuff, and I found one!

Throughout the course of my young blogging career, I’ve come across many posts titled . But me, being me, I never really took the time to look into this thing.

So finally, I decided to follow the white rabbit in the form of a little black and white PhotoHunter button, and it led me to the blogger who originated this contest, game, or whatever you’d like to call it. You can visit the official PhotoHunt information page at tnchick.com.

This is the fashionably late submission to PH of a photo of my former team, the Tonawanda (NY) Lady Lightning.

About the photo: this pic was taken moments after my team won the New York State Women’s Senior B Championship in 1997. We had just beaten the Hudson River Waves 4-0. I remember the game like it was yesterday. Actually, it was almost anti-climactic as we pretty much physically dominated them for the entire game. We had just come off a come from behind semi-final victory over Plattsburgh in which we were nearly eliminated from the tournament. When I say come from behind, I mean come from behind! We were down 2 goals with just 1:37 left in the third when we kicked it into gear and scored 3 goals to win it. So by the time we got to the final game against the Waves, we were done with the fun-and-games bullsh*t. So we kicked the crap out of them and went on to win our 6th straight State Championship.

So here we all were, tired, relieved, satisfied, happy, and cockier than ever. Well, at least I was anyway!

The photos shown are a closeup of me with really bad hair, and the entire team photo which you can click to enlarge. Sorry, but y’all gotta settle for a scanned photo as this predates modern digital photography.
